The 2010 JLCR New Member class chose two community agencies to partner with for projects: HACAP and KidsFirst.  The members have divided into two committees to design each project but all members helped with the impact implementation.

Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP)
HACAP’s mission is to help people develop skills to become successful and build strong communities.
The project with HACAP focused on their “Feeding America” work.  HACAP serves a seven-county area: Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington. Annually, HACAP manages 1.7 million pounds of food products. New Members assisted HACAP by:

  1. Once a month they provided two teams (6 – 8 individuals) to assemble HACAP food boxes that will be distributed to area families and agencies.
  2. New Members will provide a bag of toiletries to each of the 175 residents at Geneva Towers, of whom 95% of are disabled.   Donations for items such as: shampoo, soap, toilet paper, Kleenex, toothbrushes, toothpaste there will be a taken at the January GMM.

KidsFirst
KidsFirst serves Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas, helping children while their parents are in the middle of a divorce through classes to help with transition as well as one-on-one counseling.  The KidsFirst project:

  1. Raised money for workshop workbooks.
  2. Collected gently used games and school/art supplies
  3. Provided volunteering at group classes to help with activities and other needs.
