President’s Post: Meeting Expectations

A couple weeks ago, I took three little girls dress shopping.
“What? Doesn’t Karen have a son?”
Well, yes … this was different.  This shopping trip was in my official capacity as President of JLCR – with the Butterfly Kisses sponsored girls.  Everything about this morning rocked my world … from seeing the condition in which these beautiful girls lived, to watching their eyes light up after my casual comment, “It’s okay if it’s not on sale.”  Growing up, I often heard my parents say,
“To whom much is given, much is expected.”
And my morning spent with these three young girls was testament to this wisdom.
Ladies, have no doubt that much is expected of us in this community.  We are today’s standard bearer of those who, for 77 years, sought and answered the needs of countless women and girls living in the margins of Cedar Rapids.  Thankfully, JLCR is still ready, willing, and able to meet that expectation.  Every time we paint a room, bead a bracelet, buy a butterbraid (or spend a morning shopping with three little girls who simply wanted to find dresses that would make them ‘look like a princess’ for their grandpa) we stand in the gap for those who cannot.  The expectations are all around us.  Embrace them.  Meet them. Be willing to change a life … and in the process you just might change yours too.
I know mine was.
