President’s Post: Planting Seeds

Earlier this month I was asked to speak to a group of Girl Scouts about Junior League, female leadership, and the importance of volunteering. It was truly a time to “be willing to plant a seed for a tree whose shade you will never sit under.” As President of JLCR, I have had these opportunities to talk with girls of all ages and it’s been an incredible experience – from the questions they ask, to the ability to share the Junior League movement’s 110+ year legacy. To see their faces register awe as I tell them Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is a member of Junior League … and that Junior League was an integral part of the fight for a women’s right to vote.

Each day, I know every one of us plants seeds. The question is: What is going to grow? I hope it is our commitment to voluntarism, our passion for the Cedar Rapids community, and our willingness to try (and maybe fail) as we gain valuable leadership skills. You are a Junior League woman. I hope that moniker makes you proud. It does me. And to know that with each seed I plant, with a little cultivation, another young lady will see her potential and develop into a confident woman…. Just like you! Here’s to all future Junior League women!
