When I became President of JLCR, I was committed to several things … but high on the list was re-engaging our Sustainers however possible. One such way was to get today’s members to know these incredible ladies of our past. How? Why not have a Sustainer speak at each GMM? I titled this new segment: “Learn the Legacy.” Thankfully, half-way into the League year, “Learn the Legacy” has been very well received. I so appreciate the comments you have shared with me about how these 10-15 minutes each month challenge you, energize you, humble you, and encourage you to make your League membership a priority – not only for yourself, but also for your community.
The 75+ year legacy found in the JLCR membership of women such as Pat Martin, Gingie Hunstead, Lee Clancey, Nancy Evans, etc. is testament to how League truly does make a difference – personally, professionally, and civically. I am sure that the JLCR members of 1937 who established Playtime Poppy would be amazed to know that the “Happy Little Ear of Corn” would still be a vital part of growing up in Cedar Rapids more than 70 years later! (Trivia Bit: I am proud to have served as Playtime Poppy myself in 1984 and 1985).
We have six more months of sitting at the feet of our Sustainers as they share their remembrances. Let’s make the most of it…. let’s “Learn the Legacy” and commit to being a part of it for our own lifetimes.
